SAPPHIRE SOFT LEAF BUFFALO

Qualities

Sapphire Soft Leaf Buffalo has all the benefits of the other high-performance Soft Leaf Buffalo grass, such as; needing less water, deep roots, greener in winter, a good sun or shade lawn and hard wearing. However, Sapphire Buffalo Turf has the added benefit of a finer texture and deep green colour.

Sapphire’s deep root system means it will stay greener for longer in dry summer conditions and requires less watering than most lawns. Sapphire Turf maintains excellent winter colour and is well suited to be grown in homes Australia-wide.

Due to its high performance and fast runner growth, it is hard-wearing with a quick recovery rate making it an ideal choice for active families and households with large dogs. Sapphire can also withstand up to 70% shade making it one of the leading buffalo grasses for shade tolerance.

Maintenance tips

  • Cut to 20-50mm in sun or light shade,
    or 50mm-70mm in heavier shade
  • Mow every 5-10 days in warmer months,
and every 3-6 weeks in colder months
  • Fertiliser is recommended twice a year:
once in early April and once in September

SHADEMASTER BUFFALO

Qualities

Renowned for its superior shade, drought and wear tolerance. Shademaster Buffalo is an ideal choice for Maitland weather conditions and can withstand active families with children or pets.

A wide leaf blade with vigorous growth habit makes Shademaster Buffalo a hardy variety perfect for growing in difficult conditions and perfect for the quick recovery needed after the wear and tear of family fun.

With Shademaster being a great lawn choice for more shady areas, it is very versatile and will thrive in areas with full sun exposure.

When considering a buffalo lawn, Shademaster Buffalo is an economical choice in comparison to the premium varieties available. Shademaster aligns with most premium varieties in growth habit, drought tolerance and wear and tear however will lose some of its bottle green colour when the cooler months come around leaving it with a purple tinge at the blade tips.

Maintenance tips

  • Mow lawn blade 30-50mm.
  • Make sure blades are sharp and do not mow on very hot days or when hot weather is expected
  • It is recommended you fertiliser your Shademaster lawn atleast twice a year, in spring to provide the necessary boost coming in to the hot summer months and mid to late autumn in order to promote a healthier  lawn and reduce the amount of green colour loss going into winter.

KIKUYU

Qualities

Kikuyu grass is renowned for its lush green growth, drought tolerance and resistance to wear. This grass has an ability to grow and spread quickly which makes it particularly good for withstanding rough treatment by children and pets.

Kikuyu also has a remarkable ability to recover quickly if it develops a dead patch as it spreads via tough underground rhizomes which are hard to kill even in the driest conditions.

Together with Kikuyus affordable price, rapid growth rate and ability to remain a lush green all year round means Kikuyu grass is often the first choice when it comes to establishing a new lawn on larger areas and in harsher environmental conditions where other varieties would suffer.

Maintenance tips

  • Mowing height: Full sun- 30-40mm; shaded areas 50-70mm.
  • Mow every 7-10 days in warmer months and every 2-5 weeks in cooler winter months.
  • Kikuyu requires less maintenance in terms of fertilisation than many other turf varieties, however, your kikuyu lawn will still benefit from a fertiliser application twice a year (Early Spring and mid-late Autumn) or if once a year is your plan, an application in spring will be most beneficial.
